Our Story
 A Forever Home
A Haven of Hope for Rescued Pigs
Our Sanctuary Locations: Two Homes One Mission
- Makawao (2.5 acres): This tranquil location is home to over 30 rescued pigs ranging from adorable piglets to wise old pigs. This is where we hold our tours to engage the community and visitors through educational tours and outreach, raising vital awareness and support.
- Kahului (8 acres): Our larger, private Kahului sanctuary features a beautiful river and a serene pond, providing refuge for about 60 pigs. This includes our resilient Lahaina fire survivors and the beloved girls from our very first large scale rescue, when we retired 23 pigs from a closed pig farm.
Across both locations, there is a variety of breeds including charming Yorkshire KuneKunes, playful potbellies pigs and resilient Polynesian pigs. Each and every one has a unique story, and we are truly honored to be a part of the journey towards healing and happiness.
Our Promise: A True Sanctuary Not a Petting Zoo
Our Story: From Two Piglets to a Sanctuary
The Maui Pig Sanctuary began with a profound connection to farm animals, a passion ignited in our founder, Jillian, during childhood. This deep-seated affection led her to a career teaching children how to care for, love, and ride horses. It was this same heartfelt understanding of animals that led Jillian to welcome her first rescue pigs into her life.
Cupid and Valentine: The Founders
The heart and soul of the Maui Pig Sanctuary are two very special pigs: Cupid and Valentine. Rescued as tiny, four-hour-old piglets weighing only about two pounds each, they had been rejected by their mother. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, they found a loving home with Jillian.
Raised indoors, these two became well-trained house pigs and cherished members of her family. Cupid, with his unique maple scent, and Valentine, who loves to suck on his blanket, taught Jillian how sweet, loving, and intelligent pigs truly are.
As their story spread, Jillian began receiving calls from the Maui community about other pigs in need. Through tireless hard work and unwavering determination, what started as a personal commitment quickly blossomed into a heartfelt mission to save as many pigs as possible. This led to fostering and rescuing more pigs, culminating in our first official large-scale rescue in 2021.
Now, at five years old and weighing around 750 pounds each, Cupid and Valentine are the respected leaders of our herd. They enjoy their days living full-time outside with their pig family, settling into cozy barns each night. Valentine still finds comfort in his blanket as he goes to sleep.
The Maui Pig Sanctuary continues to grow and thrive thanks to the love and gentle nature of Cupid and Valentine. They are the true founders and kings of the sanctuary, and no matter how big they get, they’ll always be Mama’s little cuddle babies.
